IPL | Laser Skin Resurfacing in Central Georgia
Over the course of your lifetime, your skin goes through a lot of unintentional damage. Acting as a shield to protect your organs, muscles, tissues, blood, and bones from harm, the epidermis—the top layer of skin—is the first point of contact for most physical and environmental elements. It’s only natural that skin eventually starts to show signs of damage through age spots, wrinkles, fine lines, and scarring. The good news is that aging skin doesn’t have to affect you. Laser skin resurfacing and Intense Pulsed Light photo rejuvenation (IPL) are procedures used to combat the signs of aging and damaged skin, such as superficial wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and acne scarring. The result of these treatments is rejuvenated and revitalized skin on the face and neck.
At Peachstate Aesthetics, board-certified physicians Dr. Corey Fussell and Dr. Meagan Fussell use the Rohrer Aesthetics Spectrum Laser/IPL System, an incredible portable laser and Intense Pulsed Light system in one.

Who Is a Good Candidate for IPL or Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is ideal for women and men who want to diminish the signs of damage to their skin, such as hyperpigmentation, fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, or to improve the overall texture and appearance of their skin without undergoing surgery.
IPL is the ideal treatment for anyone whose goal is to refine their skin and even out skin discoloration. IPL is also less invasive and requires minimal downtime to allow your skin to heal.
What Is Laser Skin Resurfacing?
Laser skin resurfacing is a procedure in which a laser is used to treat signs of environmental trauma to the skin. By directing an intense beam of light at the targeted area, this superheats the water in the skin, causing controlled exfoliation of skin cells and triggering your skin’s production of collagen, encouraging new skin cells to develop and produce healthier, younger-looking skin.
There are two types of lasers used in laser treatments: non-ablative and ablative.
- Ablative lasers are used on patients with extreme damage to their skin who wish to see more dramatic results. An ablative laser works by removing the lop layer of damaged skin to reveal the new skin underneath.
- Non-Ablative lasers work beneath the skin, heating up the underlying tissue, leaving the surface intact and stimulating new collagen growth. Non-ablative laser treatments are generally used on patients with milder damage. Also, because the top layer of skin remains unscathed, there is no wound healing and, therefore, less recovery time.
The Erbium Yag Skin Resurfacing
The Spectrum device used by the physicians at Peachstate Aesthetics uses the Erbium Yag laser, or Er:Yag, which uses crystals to generate light. Though they are ablative, Er:Yag lasers are much less abrasive than other treatments, such as Co2, and require less downtime. The Er:Yag creates controlled injury to the skin, allowing the body to heal and resolving skin issues such as wrinkles, discoloration, and scar tissue.

What Is the Difference Between IPL and Laser Treatment?
Both laser and IPL treatments use a similar application technique and are used to treat many of the same skin conditions. However, laser treatments use only one wavelength of light on targeted areas and IPL releases several, allowing it to treat larger areas faster and to address several skin issues at once. Though IPL is often confused with laser treatment, it doesn’t actually use a laser, but instead uses broad spectrum light (BBL).

FAQS: IPL & Laser Skin Resurfacing in Thomaston, GA
An IPL treatment uses the power of broadband light to minimize the appearance of age spots, sun spots, acne scars, rosacea, and more.
After your IPL treatment, sun damage and other skin irregularities will come to the surface as your skin begins to heal. Most patients see visible results after their first session, but we generally recommend 3 – 6 IPL treatments scheduled about four weeks apart to get maximum results. IPL results can typically be enjoyed for years if patients take good care of their skin and keep it protected from the sun.
IPL is great for unwanted pigmentation. Skin tightening is not one of the primary benefits. It does have the ability to modestly increase collagen but not enough for a dramatic difference. A better option for skin tightening would be neuromodulators combined with laser skin resurfacing.
IPL and laser therapies complement one another. There is no one size fits all light therapy.
While IPL is a great procedure with many benefits, it is not for everybody. There are certain skin tones that are not appropriate for IPL treatment at any time, because it can easily lead to hyperpigmentation or discoloration. Additionally, IPL may not be the best solution for all issues. Our docs will evaluate your skin and discuss options during your consultation before any skin treatments.
Immediately after your IPL treatment, the treated areas will be slightly pink or red and swollen. These effects will begin to dissipate after 24 hours. You may notice discoloration and sun spots turning somewhat darker or more noticeable, and other blemishes may begin to surface. This is a good sign that the treatment is working. These spots will eventually flake off as the skin begins to heal from the inside out.
- Wear sunscreen daily with at least 30 SPF
- Keep your skin moisturized at all times
- Use a gentle cleanser with warm water at least twice a day
- Do not pick or scratch at the skin — blemishes that surface will naturally flake away
- Don’t wear makeup for at least 12 – 24 hours after treatment
- No strenuous exercise for 48 hours, as overheating the skin can affect the results
- No hot baths, hot showers, or hot tubs for 48 hours — warm showers are fine
